My mother, trying to start a conversation with a gentleman of Chinese origin, proudly mentioned that her son—that is, me—was Buddhist. The gentleman, very serious, looked at me and flatly denied any such possibility. "No, he can't be a Buddhist," he declared. "First, I saw him eating
